Summer Adventures in London: 19/07/15

Kanada-ya: The best ramen bar in London!

After work, my sisters and I arranged to meet up in Central London to eat at Kanada-ya; a ramen bar situated near Tottenham Court Road station. Unfortunately, Kanada-ya do not accept bookings so we therefore arrived extra early at 6pm to queue up, but still there was a long queue and we were expected to wait for 45 minutes. However, our queuing period was cut short to 25 minutes as half of the people left the queue to eat opposite Kanada-ya where there was another ramen noodle restaurant called Ippudo.

To my surprise, the restaurant had lack of space and slightly claustrophobic to the extent where you would have to sit next to strangers, depending on where you sat. However, this did not ruin our eating experience and we received excellent service from the waiters.

The menu only consisted of three ramen dishes: Original Ramen, Moyashi Ramen, Chashu-Men

Add-ons included: Garlic sauce, red miso paste, egg, seaweed + more

Drinks: Hot Green Tea, Japanese Lemonade, Calpis, Ramune + more
When we ordered our dishes, we had to select which ramen dish we wanted and also how soft or hard we wanted the tonkotsu ramen (Extra firm, firm, regular or soft). I really admired the fact that this was an option to customers as it showed that the ramen would be cooked specially and according to one's preferences. In addition, you could order an extra portion of ramen if you had any remaining broth for £2.

I chose the 'Original Ramen' dish which is a 18hr pork bone broth and secret sauce topped with cha shu and wood ear fungus sprinkled with spring onions.
The dish was beautifully displayed with cha-shu decorating the outer area of the bowl, with the ramen in the centre (see photos below). The ramen was slightly bland but it complemented well with the broth. The flavour of the broth was intense and salty and the pork flavour really came through. Now, I understand why this restaurant is one of most highly-rated ramen places in London. To add to their reputation, they have branches in Hong Kong and Japan.

Overall, I had an enjoyable experience and the meal was well worth it's price and worth queuing for. The service was fast and the manager and staff were very friendly and calm despite the busy atmosphere.

Check out the restaurant in 64 St. Giles High Street, WC2H 8LE, London.

You will not regret it!

Outside queuing and it was raining heavily
